According to the dictionary globalization is the act or process of globalizing : the state of being globalized ;especially : the development of an increasingly integrated global economy marked especially by free trade, free flow of capital, and the tapping of cheaper foreign labor markets. Some people feel that globalization is a good thing. They feel that Globalization is the bringing down of the walls of commercialism that has been going around the whole globe since its inception in the 1880's. Globalization has formed some semblance of unity among all us and the concerns of other nation that back then were opted to be resolved on their own are now an issue with other countries as well and all unite to propel themselves to a solution. They also feel that it creates a more accessible market for anyone all over the world regardless of color, race, and social. Some others feel that Labor will be deemed as very low since technologies will be much more utilized. Yet others disagree. They feel that there is a threat in the business outsourcing industry, one of the highest grossing industries today, and also the so called brain drain might continue because skilled people will be generally recruited all over the world to serve the ordering power.
In today's society the media plays a major role in the choices that people make. Media affects our thinking and how we act. It is stated, “to the extent that images of average sized models focus viewers’ attention on their own bodies, it may trigger fear of fatness among females (Swami and Smith 154).” This evidence is important because it helps understand how they show us something and we right away believe it and think that we are suppose to be one way. Also it is said “…it may come as a shock to realize that even the way we see our bodies is filtered through the lens of social values and beliefs (Ortiz Cofer 396).” This basically means that even though we are supposed to believe and do one thing we still see ourselves different and in some instances put ourselves down. It’s all in the media and what it does to us. It caused women to do drastic things. In Fiji, after watching “westernized” television, the teens began to diet and do other things to look thin. Before watching television women in Fiji thought it was good to be big sized. But because of the media and globalization all that changed. This makes people disown their own culture and conform to something their not. Also people buy hair from all around the world. If your hair is short, hair weaving can make it longer; if it's long, you can have a shorter look without cutting your hair. The art of hair weaving involves attaching your own hair to synthetic or human hair. A variety of techniques are used to attach the hair: braiding, keratin bonding or sewing the hair onto cornrows, and weaving the hair into cornrows. At the beauty supply there is a huge selection of human hair in various textures. This hair could come from any country. A major source of Remy hair is Asian countries.
The fact that we live in a world where only people who look a certain way control is has something to do with Occupy Wall Street because The Occupy Wall Street movement calls attention to the "1 percent" who control 40 percent of our wealth, and a rigged political system that protects their interests. With that the government allows these companies to create products with out informing the buyers what are in these products and also not telling them the harm that can possibly happen to them from using the product.
Everyone should be able to set their own beauty standards. People from all over the world should be able to come together and show different aspects of beauty instead of being “white washed” into thinking that if they don't look a certain way that they are ugly. Traditional notions of feminine beauty vary across cultures and generations. Stereotypes include a Latin American appreciation for petite women with curves; an Asian appreciation of oval faces, black hair, and average heights; and, Indian and African appreciation for women who have a healthy weight. While these stereotypes held true in the past, globalization is changing traditional notions of beauty. Who decides what is beautiful? Societies often develop norms that are reinforced by cultural industries. Branding tries to make an emotional connection for the viewers to social status, fashionable cities, movies stars and models, and romantic images. As globalization is bringing increased interaction and integration amongst societies around the world, definitions of “what is beautiful” may also be converging as well.
